WSUP Advisory contributes to progress in Lagos urban water and sanitation

Themes: Advisory Market development Water

WSUP Advisory was a key player in the recent Sanitation Conference organized by the USAID-funded Lagos Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (LUWASH) project. The conference gathered key stakeholders to tackle the pressing sanitation issues facing Lagos, including inadequate access to safe sanitation, poor wastewater management, open defecation, and contaminated source water.

To inform decision-making and identify gaps in service coverage, LUWASH commissioned a citywide water and sanitation services delivery assessment. WSUP Advisory’s Principal Consultant, Philip Oyamo, presented the findings of this assessment, highlighting the significant role of the private sector in delivering water and sanitation services in Lagos while also identifying opportunities for state agencies to expand their involvement.

The conference provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, explore innovative solutions, and strengthen collaboration. WSUP Advisory’s involvement in LUWASH extends beyond the conference, as we actively work to enhance policy, institutions, and regulatory capacity to improve access to water and safe sanitation in Lagos. Additionally, we are supporting the Lagos Water Corporation in improving its management and operational efficiency.

As part of a consortium led by Chemonics, WSUP Advisory is focused on:

  • Strengthening policy, institutions, and regulations (PIR) for water supply in Lagos
  • Designing and overseeing the City-Wide Service Delivery Assessment (CSDA)
  • Supporting change management and implementing performance improvement plans (PIPs) for the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC)
  • Assisting LWC and private operators in delivering water services to low-income customers

The Sanitation Conference provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, explore innovative solutions, and strengthen collaboration. WSUP Advisory’s involvement in LUWASH extends beyond the conference, as we actively work to create a healthier and more equitable future for the people of Lagos.
