For 16 years, Jane Wanjiku, a resident of Blue Estate in Nairobi, Kenya, witnessed the devastating impact of poor sanitation. Open drains, overflowing pit latrines, and a nearby river choked with waste constantly threatened the health of her community, especially children.
But thanks to a life-changing project by WSUP, funded by the One Foundation, things are finally turning around. WSUP partnered with the Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company to install last-mile sewer connections for Blue Estate households.
“Before the sewer lines, it was a nightmare,” Jane recalls. “Waste flowed freely, causing diseases and making life unbearable.”
The new system has revolutionized sanitation in Blue Estate. Landlords can now build and connect proper flush toilets to the sewer lines, significantly improving hygiene.
“The toilets are cleaner, easier to maintain, and there’s no more risk of overflowing waste during the rainy season. The new system has brought comfort and reassurance to my community,” Jane says, her voice filled with relief.
The impact extends beyond individual homes. Storm drains and the nearby river are no longer choked with sewage, creating a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.
As a Community Health Promoter, Jane recognizes the additional benefits. Flush toilets are more accessible for children and older people, eliminating the dangers associated with pit latrines.
However, challenges remain. Improper waste disposal, such as sanitary pads and nappies, can cause blockages in the new system. This is where Jane’s role becomes crucial.
“We need ongoing education about proper waste disposal. I have been using my platform as a Health Promoter to spread awareness about the importance of proper toilet use and waste disposal to ensure the project’s long-term success,” she emphasizes.
Through WSUP’s initiative, The One Foundation’s funding, and Jane’s community engagement, residents are finally enjoying the benefits of proper sanitation and a healthier future.
